Marketing’s Ascendancy at INTEL

Good news coming out of Intel. The company, long steeped in an inward-looking Moore’s Law culture, has elevated a rare breed of Intel insider – a Marketing guru - to be its new CEO. Paul Otellini, the first Intel CEO with an MBA and without a technical PhD, is best known for his role in driving new market and distribution channel expansions, including the push by Intel to sell more over the Internet.

Check out Otellini’s first quote: “I obviously approach it a bit more from a product and marketing side. Craig [Barrett, current CEO] has approached it from the silicon technology side”. Harbinger of good news about Intel’s future strategic direction? Not surprisingly, shares at Intel rose on the news.

Otellini’s first marketplace challenge? Pursuading Dell Computer not to follow up on its reported threat to abandon its sole-source reliance on Intel’s microprocessors in favor of Advanced Micro Devices.
